What is Gemmology?

Humans have been fascinated with gemstones for thousands of years. Gems are among the rarest and most desirable materials on Earth, and have historically played an important role in economics, politics, religion, lore and fashion. People collect and buy gems for many reasons; to adorn themselves or their surroundings, as an investment, to demonstrate our wealth, or so we can benefit from their supposed healing properties.

Gemmologists are individuals trained in the science of gem materials, allowing them to identify gemstones and determine their nature before deciding whether they are natural, treated or synthetic. Accurate identification is essential for both the jewellery trade and the collector, and students who delve into gemmology will find themselves observing and investigating the beauty of natural science.

Gem-A was created by gemmologists for gemmologists, and is the world’s longest-established provider of gem and jewellery education. We started teaching gemmology more than 100 years ago, prompted by the need for greater gem knowledge in the UK jewellery trade. Our up-to-date courses are primarily tailored for the jewellery industry, giving our students the background knowledge and practical experience they need in their gemmology careers.

You will learn about coloured gems and diamonds, their identification, value factors, and the many challenges of treatments and imitations — crucial knowledge for buyers, sellers and valuers of gems, as well as gem collectors who, attracted by the extraordinary beauty of gemstones, simply wish to pursue a new hobby.
